Interview with Jerry from NothingNew

NothingNew is a band made up of two members – Jerry and Andrew. We were recently able to snag an interview with Jerry!

Q #1: How did you all meet?

Well I’m not 100% sure on this. Me and andrew have known each other for 17 or 18 years. I think I had a friend that worked in a mall record store that knew Andrew and he introduced us. We have a lot of similar musical tastes, even back then. Then I went to see his band play and he came to see mine. Life happens, years later we run into each other at a show and kick around the idea of finally doing a band together. We started working together about a year ago full time and the rest is up on the internet.

Q #2: How did you come up with your name?

So, I had an idea of doing a cover band for charity. like a bunch of guys that play in other bands that would play shows for causes. have the band interchangeable so if one guy couldn’t show up another would be able to play. I wanted to call it NothingNew and play the songs that we love not just the singles or popular song. It never got off the ground and when we were talking about a name I mentioned that name NothingNew. Andrew liked it and it stuck.

Q #3: Who are your biggest influences?

For me, it changes a lot. I love bands like Sleep, Kyuss, Yob, and Elder. I also love eyehategod, Down, Crowbar, COC, and all the New Orleans stuff which Andrew does also. I’m getting into black metal slowly and I guess bands like Deafheaven and Oathbreaker. As a kid, I was into grunge bands like nirvana, tad, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney. I also love old and new hardcore like Fugazi, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Agnostic Front, Madball, and stuff like that.

Q #4: Have you ever collaborated with any other artists/bands in the past? If so, who?

Me and Andrew have both played in a lot of bands. On the new record CEAN that is coming out Sept. 13, 2019, we did a song with Andrew’s son Devin Zinn.

Q #5: What do you hope people take from your music and what messages are you trying to share with listeners when they hear your music?

For me, I just want people to enjoy the music. Having anyone listen to and enjoy my music is a win for me. We know we have a darker message and not everyone will follow that but also we feel like it’s not always about all of that. Plus we have fun with this and we want the listener to have fun also.

Q #6: Where do you see yourself in a year? Have any big plans?

Well, this year we have out full-length CEAN coming out on September 13, 2019.  It will be on all streaming site and for sale on iTunes and Amazon.  Preorder go up August 16, 2019, if you want to make sure you have it the day it comes out.  We just shared on our facebook the album cover and the video for the first single 15984 hours. We are on a regional black sabbath tribute that will be released this year.  I’m honestly talking with the guys over that now about the release and where people can get it or download it.  It will be a free release, but I think donations will be up to help the bands with recording and packaging. NothingNew did the song children of the grave on it.  We are waiting for its release to release our cover so it will be all at once. Besides that, we are record album too and other cool things. We film a video podcast we upload to our Facebook and Youtube page.  We try to do it weekly but sometimes it doesn’t work out.  we will do more of that also.
